About Tinctoria

I started dyeing with natural dyes in the late 1980′s and since then have gained a great deal of practical knowledge of dyeing with natural dyes.

During the process I became increasingly interested in the history of dyeing and the colours used by different social classes throughout history, when different dyes were first imported into this country, who would wear certain colours and the laws that dictated whether you could wear a certain colour or not.

Many of the plants used I either grow or collect myself and do all the dyeing at my workshop studio in my home in Wiltshire.

I will be happy to advise on any issues regarding what colour to chose when ordering from me.

Historical Re-enactment
My yarns and threads are suitable both for contemporary and traditional embroidery, knitting and textile art and as they are dyed with natural plant dyes all the colours blend in a very harmonious way.

Many people who take part in historical re-enactment use my yarns and come to me for advice on which colours are suitable for the period which they are re-enacting.

Using ancient recipes from as far afield as the Highlands of Scotland to the Far East and more modern recipes, some of which are my own, and the best natural yarns, I now invite you to share in the delights of the colours of nature.

If you would like to commission me for a particular project I would be pleased to hear from you.
